It’s Time To Meet Your Maker: Maker Pizza

Pizza lovers of Toronto, it’s time to meet your maker. A new pizza joint has opened at 59 Cameron Street, and it’s a serious contender for the best delivery pizza in the city. Maker Pizza offers a classic take-out menu of moderately priced sandwiches, salads, wings and pizza, crafted with top quality ingredients by professional pie masters. Owner Shlomo Buchler (formerly of FBI Pizza) joined forces with the one and only Matty Matheson of Parts & Labour to create some epic pizzas that blow your average pepperoni and cheese out of the water.

The fundamental idea behind Maker Pizza is for customers to really get to know the people making their pizza. While the pizzeria operates mainly as a delivery option, customers can also dine in at the communal table. Designed by Community, Maker Pizza’s bright and minimalist space resembles a trendy cafeteria where you might catch an employee on their lunch break. Customers can watch through glass into the exposed kitchen as their pizza is being expertly crafted by Head Chef Jemal (formerly of The Good Son) and his talented team. Their passion for making the best quality pizza is pretty clear after witnessing these professional pizza makers in high-intensity action.

The menu features 10 signature pies with punny names, but customers can also be their own maker and customize a red or white base pizza with their choice of gourmet toppings. Made with top-notch ingredients picked fresh from the market, the house-made tomato sauce truly makes all the difference. You know how the crust at mediocre pizza joints can be so blah? What really sets Maker Pizza apart is their phenomenal crust. Far from being just a medium for toppings, the flavourful crust is the perfect level of thickness that’s firm yet foldable.

We started off strong with one of their standout white pizzas called Frank’s Best. This sweet yet savoury pizza has caramelized onions, goat cheese, rosemary, roasted garlic, olive oil, mozzarella, parmesan, sea salt, and honey, with a dynamite sesame crust resembling a classic Montreal-style bagel.

Next we tried one of Maker Pizza’s most popular red pies, the sweet and spicy Tropic Thunder. With pineapple, jalapeno, red onion, fior di latte, mozzarella, parmesan, olive oil, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, sesame crust, mint, and red chilies, this crowd pleaser has a really nice kick to it.

Then along came the Dr. Pepperoni – a personal favourite of mine. Made with lots of super tasty pepperoni, tomato sauce, toasted in-house fennel oil, parmesan, olive oil, flor di latte and mozzarella, this pie took the comforting classic to a whole other level. This is the kind of pizza you crave at all hours of the day.

Not to be overlooked are Maker Pizza’s spectacular sandwiches, wings and salads. One of the best Eggplant Parms I’ve ever had, this Italian sandwich made from a Kaiser bun, mozzarella, tomato sauce, fried eggplant, roasted red pepper, roasted jalapeno, caramelized onions and parmesan, had a surprisingly meaty texture.

The dangerously delicious Meatball Sub is made with a Ciabatta bun, house-made meatballs, mozzarella, parmesan, tomato sauce, roasted red pepper, peperoncini, iceberg lettuce, rapini, onion and some super yummy sub sauce. If you’re looking to satisfy a craving for a classic hoagie, The Bodega is one delicious submarine sandwich that has all the right fixings.

Verdict: Maker Pizza is made with a passion that you can taste, right in the comfort of your own home. Their pizza is always fresh and cooked just the way you like it. They truly have their customers in mind when making each and every pie. With a variety of unique pizzas on their menu, as well as sides such as salads, wings, sandwiches and pastas, Maker Pizza is a must try for those who haven’t yet. You will not be disappointed!
