Profiled: La Carnita Eastside

The rumours have been swirling and the chatter has begun to heat up. La Carnita is expanding and will be opening its second location at 780 Queen Street East on Monday March 16th at 5pm. What a win this is for the east side of Toronto.

We had the absolute pleasure of attending the soft opening last night, and let us tell you that this is traditional La Carnita. They have brought everything that made the College Street West location what it is over to the new location. Executive chef Jon Hamilton is leading the charge with the same menu that is offered at the original location. We were thrilled to see this. It really is a classic menu from top to bottom.

Everything on the menu is a must try, but we’ll run through some quick highlights from our night. To drink, we are talking The O.G. We’ve never tasted something quite like this. A beer Caesar simply put; clamato juice spiced up and served with a can of Corona with a tasty salt rim. Bang Bang. Our go to starters are the Tortilla Chips served with Guacamole, Corn Salsa, and Serrano & Cashew Bean Dip, followed by the Mexican Street Corn, finished with the BBQ Ribs. The Ribs are out of control; topped with home made hickory sticks, the flavour just pops and the meat falls right off the bone. Usually only served on Sundays, the BBQ Ribs are now available every day at this location!

Fist pump. Round 1 complete.

Main course is Taco Time. The highlights are Beef Cheek – ancho braised cheek, lime avocado, green cabbage, pickled jalapeño & crispy shallots and In Cod We Trust – voltron sauce, lime crema, pickled red cabbage, green apple & cilantro. Count on Chef Jon Hamilton’s daily specials to be out of this world as well. So do inquire. Round 2 complete.

To finish it off, the Churros with house made Cajeta and the daily flavoured Paletas. Fresh to death and simply delicious. We tried the Luckier Charms flavoured Paleta and it was just incredible. Okay, fine, we also finished it off with another O.G. Round 3 complete, game over.

Food put aside, the new location has the same vibe and layout as the original. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, classic and new hip-hop tunes, a dark and hip feel, it really is a very original and fun spot. You will never be disappointed here. Great for date nights as well as group outings.

Well done La Carnita. The east side welcomes you. For more information on La Carnita please visit their website at:
